"I never interacted with an Iraqi woman unless it was the wife and the husband. But we would sit down, and the times that we went to dinner to their home, she always sat with us. She’d go out with her husband and smoke shisha and I would have a cigar and my buddy would have a cigar. So that was unusual. When we were with the governor of Nasiriyah, there were no women around even when we ate. So it’s a very segregated society when it comes men and women [and] Sunni and Shia. Very segregated."

In this video, a military service member discusses women in Iraq.
