Personal Space in the United Arab Emirates

Video Transcript

“Part of their culture, and you could see it in, more in Saudi Arabia than UAE, but a little bit in UAE, was guys, when they’re standing around, they’d be holding hands, they’d be very close. For part of the U.S. personnel, you could tell there was little bit of awkwardness. Not so much being offended, but it was more of the, ‘What’s going on?’ kind of thing. You’d have the host nation personnel might even come up to you and try to hold your hand or get real close to you. It was not so much what you’re used to for your own personal space. So, just being able to adjust to that, or again, just let it go, take it with a grain of salt. And to them it’s just showing that, ‘Hey, you’re a friend of mine. We have a close bond.’ So it’s not so much that they’re trying to do something to make you uncomfortable, but it’s just their way of just showing, ‘Hey, you’re pretty all right with me.’”

In this video, an Army major discusses differences in personal space.
