Social Class in Algeria

Video Transcript

What is happening right now in Algeria, and actually in North Africa in general, is that, societies in general, they are very dynamic. And what we have seen or known for the last century, it cannot be the same. So, for instance, when I mentioned the nobles among the Berbers or even among Arabs, well, they lost off their, how would you say that in English? Aura, like the weight in the society. And to me it looks like now money is the social [metric] in the region.

I remember 20, 30 years ago you couldn't marry a woman or man from [a] very respected and known family unless you were from the same status. And actually this stays valid until now among some families. But we cannot generalize. It was a time, you can't, just you can't, no matter how wealthy you were, if you are not from the same status you cannot marry that person. But now we see it less and less.

In this video, an Algerian national discusses social trends and social class in Algeria.
