"Jordan is still in many ways a tribal place. And you get to know certain family names as members of a certain tribe. It’s more to know that people’s tribal affiliations do have significance. Whereas everybody whose last name is Smith here is not related, it’s much more likely that somebody whose last name is Al-Omari is related to the next guy you meet whose last name is that. You do ask that, but also you can use that if you’re working in different communities. You can ask your colleagues, 'I’m going to meet this person; this is their name. Can you tell me about their family or potentially tell me about where that’s from?'"

In this video, an expert on Jordan discusses tribalism.
