The Uzbek police though, sometimes, they will stop you if they perceive you to be a Westerner, sometimes, for a shakedown. They'll ask for your passport, and they'll threaten to take your passport unless you pay them 'bakish,' a fine, right there on the spot. 'A fine for what?' 'Well, you're not supposed to be here.' 'Am I not supposed to be here?' 'It's not permitted.' 'What?' By then, I'd say, 'Well, I work for the Embassy. You want me to tell the Embassy this?' Or, 'We can call them right now.' He's, 'Oh, no, no, no, no. It's OK. Go on. Just go.'
