Gender in Tunisia

Video Transcript

The encouraged separation between men and women, it really [varies] from the city to the village. In the village it's almost automatically the leader of that little town, or the oldest man, he's gonna be in charge of separating the women and men. So you cannot mix it. It's so obvious that you cannot mistake it.

In the city, it's different. In the city it's pretty much like here [in the U.S.]. You hang out together, let's say there's a party, then everybody [is] in the same room or the same place, they're all hanging out. So yes, it's gonna be open-minded, it's gonna be almost like here. But if you are in a more conservative environment, then definitely it's gonna be that separation so clear.

In this video, a Tunisian national discusses men and women in Tunisia.
