Attire in the Dominican Republic

Video Transcript

I think certainly if you're working in the embassy there's a lot of expectations to go to engagements out of uniform. And the Dominicans, in general, typically dress very formally. Certainly the women do. They take a lot of time, they spend a lot of time on how they look. So there [are] a lot of appointments at the salon and a lot of makeup. And so particularly as a woman going you have to be aware of that, that there's an expectation that you're going to go and dress to the nines a lot. The good news is there [are] a lot of pretty decent seamstresses [where] you can get some stuff made. But it is a very formal society in that sense. They do get dressed up.

In this video, a Coast Guard lieutenant commander describes the attire of Dominicans.
