A lot of people associate culture training with learning about foreign culture. However, some of the most important cultural training a soldier receives is about their own culture. Before soldiers step into a foreign culture, it's essential that they're securely tied into their own American military culture. Knowing your own culture is a survival skill, particularly during a deployment. The Army values, the soldier's creed, the oath of enlistment, even the pledge of allegiance, can remind a soldier of their own culture and give them a lifeline to their own culture when things get chaotic and unpredictable. At home or downrange, knowing your own culture is a survival skill. Culture matters.
