Demographics of Turkmenistan

Video Transcript

“Besides the Turkmen ethnicity, again, they share a border with Afghanistan, so there’s a, the further South you go, there’s a greater mix of ethnic Afghans, but with a Turkmen identity. And my impression is, probably out of all the Central Asian States, Turkmenistan is, not having been there, but I get the feeling is probably the most homogenous, ethnically. The general impression is that Turkmenistan is sort of an island unto itself in Central Asia. Not having been there I’m not sure of the other ethnic minorities. At one time there was a significant Russian minority. And I think they’ve mostly gone back to Russia, almost as a whole. Probably Turkmenistan has the least ethnic Russian population.”

In this video, a U.S. Army civilian employee discusses the ethnic landscape of Turkmenistan.
