Etiquette in Sierra Leone

Video Transcript

“Across West Africa, people generally do not use toilet paper when they use the bathroom. They actually use their left hand and soap and water to cleanse themselves. Because of that, people generally use the right hand for everything. They use the right hand to give and take objects, to eat, shake hands, gesture, point, anything. To do any of those things with the left hand can be insulting to the person. Sort of like if I try to hand you something with my left hand; it’s kind of an insult, like I don’t even respect you enough to put this into my right hand to give it to you. So, always use the right hand. For people who are naturally left-handed, try to use your right when you can, especially when eating. If you are really having trouble, you can explain to people, ‘Oh, I’m left handed. Please forgive me if I use my left hand.’ And most of the time people will be understanding.”

In this video, a Sierra Leone expert discusses why not to use the left hand in Sierra Leone.
