Food in Jamaica

Video Transcript

Our main dish is ackee and saltfish. Ackee, it's a yellow, it reminds you of scrambled eggs. But you cook it with cod fish, or what is considered to the Spanish 'bacalao.' It's dried cod fish, and you cook that sometimes with dumplings or boiled bananas. Most of the time you talk about Jamaica, people talk about the jerk. The jerk pork or the jerk chicken. Now they have gone to jerk crab, jerk ice cream. We eat a lot of rice. Rice and peas. A lot of seafood. And there are a lot of vegetarians, as well as vegans in Jamaica. But most of our food is just fresh food. Most people grow their food at home.

In this video, an Army master sergeant and native Jamaican elaborates on Jamaican cuisine.
