Greetings in Ethiopia

Video Transcript

“A very typical greeting in Amharic would be to wish that God grant the other person health. So what you would say is, ‘Te'na yistiligne.’ Which means, ‘May He grant you health for me.’ So this greeting, ‘te'na yistiligne,’ ‘te’na’ means health. That ending is sort of like the ‘gn’ in lasagna, or the ‘ñ’ in Spanish. And that’s first person, so that’s the part that means, ‘On my behalf.’ The middle part means, ‘May He give.’ So, ‘Health may He give you for me.’ ‘Te’na yistiligne.’”

In this video, an Ethiopian expert discusses the greetings in Ethiopia.
