Independence in Côte d'Ivoire

Video Transcript

“The reason why I wouldn’t advise anybody to call Côte d'Ivoire Ivory Coast or translate it into Portuguese or Spanish, is because, after independence they inherited this name from France, Ivory Coast, la Côte d'Ivoire. But down the road in 1985 President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who led the country to independence, changed the name and said from 1985 on, the name should be, of this territory should be Côte d'Ivoire. It doesn’t need to be called Ivory Coast, Costa Ivoria or anything else but Côte d'Ivoire. And it shouldn’t be translated.”

In this video, a Côte d'Ivoire expert explains Ivoirian independence.
