Taboos in Togo

Video Transcript

“Among some of the ethnic groups in Togo you are not supposed to whistle, mainly during, especially during the night because when you whistle it’s so quiet that the bad ‘genie,’ the bad [spirits] will feel like, ‘Oh, there is celebration going on, let’s go sing with them. Those are other [spirits] singing out there, let’s go join the celebration.’ It would be considered rude if you go [whistles]. You just don’t do it. If you want to do it, do it in your bedroom when you are alone, and look in the window and see bad spirits are coming to join up with you to celebrate. But when you are with local people, it’s not a good idea to whistle.”

In this video, a Togolese expert discusses taboos in Togo.
