The Ukrainians are very proud of their country and they feel like through the history of Ukraine it has been looked at by some of their neighbors as a subset, as not an actual nationality, and so to be able to say a few words in Ukrainian, even if they're just something you had learned, like a few phrases, is just another method...like we talked about learning who Taras Shevchenko is or understanding the meaning of the tryzub. It gives you a little bit of a bond because the people look at you and say, 'This person is interested in us,' and so that helps.
