Family Structure in the Dominican Republic

Video Transcript

Families in the Dominican Republic are very, in general, very united. I think people are very family oriented. But again, so I go back to it all depends where you are, if you are in a low, if you didn't go to school, some people don't even get married. In that society, they don't get married so they just live together, but they never get married. Sometimes the dad is not present because he left the entire family, and that happens a lot too. Also, you can see very very [frequently] where the dad has two or three families at the same time. And even rich people in the high class, that happens, it doesn't matter which class. It happens a lot, a lot. Even in my family, my grandfather had a boy in between my dad and my uncle. And then my grandmother found out and they got a divorce. But that kid was raised by his grandfather from his mom's side. So we never got to, even though we know who it is and we see each other sometimes. But it's not a close relationship. So that happens a lot.

In this video, a Dominican American describes the family structure.
